The American Swedish Institute has the world’s largest collection of flat-plane wooden figure carvings. The exhibitions staff wanted to help their visitors imagine the kinds of stories that might have inspired the woodcarvers. Many of the original artists were immigrants to America, so we decided to tell two stories—one with more traditional Swedish-American themes and another which might resonate more with contemporary immigrants to the United States, specifically to the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
