This is a lyric video for the band Orchid Eaton. After some conversations with singer Matt Leavitt about the song, and the broader inspiration behind their record Where All Ends Meet, I came to them with this concept: a man and a dog playing chess on a boat. It was a real delight to design and bring to life this moody scene. I drew inspiration from reference material ranging from Go, Dog. Go! by P.D. Eastman, to The Seventh Seal by Ingmar Bergman, to Hades the video game.
The character animation is all done in Adobe Animate. The scenery and various static objects throughout the video were all painted in Photoshop or Procreate. The reflections, mist, and general ambience were created in After Effects. The little abstract dancing sprites that dance overhead halfway through the video were animated in Iorama Studio’s iPad app, Looom.
The texture overlay was provided by my good friend Merit Thursday.
